OPC vs sulphate-resisting cement: choosing the right cement in Oman

Published October 12, 2026 · 5 min read · By the SURBAHLA technical desk

Oman’s coastal plains and sabkha flats combine warm temperatures with chloride- and sulphate-bearing groundwater. The cement you specify for foundations and below-grade works matters as much as the concrete grade.

Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC, Type I)

OPC is the general-purpose choice for above-ground structural work, blockwork mortar and screeds where the soil and groundwater are benign. It gains strength quickly and is widely available in 50 kg bags and bulk tankers.

Sulphate-resisting cement (SRC, Type V)

SRC limits tricalcium aluminate (C3A) so concrete resists sulphate attack. Specify it for foundations, basements and buried concrete in sabkha or where soil tests show elevated sulphates.

What to check before you order

  • Standard: ASTM C150 or EN 197-1 as required by the project specification
  • Soil and groundwater sulphate and chloride test results
  • Bag or bulk delivery, and storage under cover off the ground
  • Batch certificates for every delivery
